Still Want to Study in the UK? Apply Through UCAS Clearing 2025

Sart University in the UK in 2025

Still thinking about studying in the UK this year? Good news — UCAS Clearing 2025 is open, and there’s still time to secure your place at a UK university. From engineering and computer science to business, art, and health-related courses, universities across the UK are currently accepting international student applications for a limited number of remaining spaces.

Whether you missed the main UCAS deadline, changed your plans, or just received your final results, Clearing is your opportunity to take the next step in your academic journey.

What Is UCAS Clearing?

Clearing is the official process that allows students to apply for university courses in the UK that still have available spaces after the main application cycle. It’s designed for students who:

  • Did not receive any offers
  • Declined all their offers
  • Applied late or are applying for the first time
  • Achieved different results than expected

For international students, Clearing is a flexible, second-chance route to join a top UK university — even if you’ve only just decided to study abroad.

UCAS Clearing allows you to start university this autumn – you could apply to top institutions like Cardiff University for example (on the picture).

You can submit one application at a time for Clearing, as soon as your acceptance is confirmed you may proceed with the next steps including visa application.

Do I Need a New UCAS Account to Apply?

Not always. If you already applied through UCAS earlier in the year and didn’t receive any offers, or declined your offers, then you don’t need to create a new UCAS account. You can simply access your existing one and apply through Clearing.

However, if you’re applying for the first time, you’ll need to register for a UCAS account and pay the application fee.

Is there an application fee to apply for Clearing?

To apply for clearing the standard UCAS application fee applies. For 2025 the fee is £28.50 if you are applying to more than one course or applying after the 30 June deadline. If you have already paid this amount whilst submitting your original UCAS application then no further fees are required. If you are only just creating your UCAS account and are submitting a new application then you must pay the fee.

When is the deadline to apply for Clearing?

Clearing remains open until mid-October 2025. However, keep in mind that spaces are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Competitive courses and top-ranked universities which are in high demand often get full quickly. As an international student you also need to pay extra attention to deadlines and aim at submitting your application as soon as possible to ensure you get your CAS and apply for visa before the start date.

What are the documents that I need to apply for Clearing?

Clearing application documents are essentially the same as those for regular UCAS applications. The main difference however, is that you may only apply for clearing once you have received all your final grades and qualifications. This is because clearing applications are so close to the course start date, that the steps have to be completed quickly, avoiding any delays.

Before you even start calling universities, you need to prepare:

  • Final academic transcripts or certificates
  • English language test results (e.g., IELTS, TOEFL)
  • A personal statement (unless the university requests differently)
  • A valid passport
  • Reference letters (if applicable)

Make sure your documents are up to date and ready to share quickly — universities may ask for them before making you an offer.

Can I apply for foundation through Clearing?

Although some UK universities offer integrated foundation programmes, accepting applications through clearing, this might not always be the best option. For international students who require additional academic or English language preparation, a pathway foundation through an international provider might be a better fit.

These providers often offer more tailored support and flexible entry points, and they don’t always require a UCAS application. If you’re interested in Foundation or International Year One programmes, it’s worth exploring your options beyond Clearing.

How Many Courses Can I Apply to Through Clearing?

Unlike the standard UCAS application where you can apply up to 5 options, you may only submit one application at a time through clearing. Here’s how it works:

  1. Contact the university directly – Speak to admissions staff to confirm availability and entry requirements.
  2. Receive a verbal or written offer – If they’re happy to accept you, they’ll give you a Clearing number or invite you to apply.
  3. Add the course to your UCAS Hub – Only after receiving permission can you formally submit the course via your UCAS account.

You can repeat this process with different universities if needed — but only one application can be active at a time.
